Health Insurance Underwriting
There are three main types of health insurance underwriting: moratorium; full medical underwriting (FMU); and switch.
Moratorium underwriting (rolling 5,2,2) is often referred to as underwriting at the point of claim. When setting up your private medical insurance policy, you will not have to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions. However, any pre-existing conditions are not covered for the first 2 years of the policy. A pre-existing condition is any condition for which you have had ‘symptoms’, ‘treatment’ or ‘advice’ on during the last 5 years. After the first 2 years of the policy any of your pre-existing conditions may be covered, provided that you have had no 'symptoms', 'treatment' or 'advice' during that period. If you have had 'symptoms', 'treatment' or 'advice' then your moratorium will continue for a further 2 years (for that condition) before being eligible for cover. The benefit of this form of underwriting is that it does not permanently exclude pre-existing conditions from cover, and there is no medical declaration to complete.
FMU is a more in-depth form of health insurance underwriting than moratorium underwriting. When setting up your policy, you will need to disclose information about your medical history. The benefit that comes with FMU is the peace of mind that you definitely know what you will and won’t be covered for; it’s there in black and white.
Switch is solely for people who are existing private medical insurance customers and are looking to ‘switch’ to another provider. Your new health insurance provider should cover you for any conditions that you currently have or are having on your existing private medical insurance, whilst also keeping the same exclusions. |
